This year, through my work as the Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling Manager at the International Human Rights Film Festival, I had the pleasure of meeting Sandra Antoniazzi, proofreader and co-editor of Cómo organizar un festival de cine con compromiso social, un manual para organizadores de eventos cinematográficos de derechos humanos y medio ambiente (the Spanish adaptation of Setting Up a Human Rights Film Festival) published by the Instituto Multimedia DerHumALC (IMD) in 2016.

What is the Handbook?

The handbook arises from the adaptation of two volumes previously published by members of the Human Rights Film Network and is intended to help emerging festivals take their first steps, compiling and systematizing success stories and challenges faced by some of the most representative events of the network. The Spanish edition is adapted to the Latin American context and includes case studies of festivals in Latin American countries.

Why Talk about Festivals Committed to Making a Social Impact?

When I started working with Cine Fértil’s LatinArab International Film Festival, back in 2011, it dawned on me. I understood how film can be a tool for social change. Throughout these years I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of organizing events committed to making a social impact and witness firsthand the effort and expertise required to carry them out. Also, of the satisfaction that comes from seeing audiences in the theaters, from interacting with artists, and from learning and growing both professionally and personally.

These events are ever so relevant, as more and more companies today are looking to integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations. Film festivals that effect social change offer an ideal platform for this. This handbook provides an in-depth understanding of how film festivals can be an excellent opportunity for companies to showcase their CSR, generate positive impact and connect with the community. By partnering with such events, companies not only contribute to their success, but also demonstrate their support for causes and benefit from increased visibility and recognition in a relevant and meaningful context.

The best part? Both the original handbook and its Spanish version are free and can be found 👉 here.
