The 8th edition of the International Environmental Film Festival (FINCA) has come to an end and now I can look back and reflect… The times they are a-changin, so I can't help but wonder: what does a Film Festival Translation and Subtitling team look like in the face of a morphing film industry?

Zooming in on Our In-House Translation and Subtitling Team

🌱 This year, we worked with a boutique team, which allowed me to zoom in on different processes and think about new ways of working and new opportunities moving forward. While the scope of our translation and subtitling work may seem to be shrinking, other avenues are opening up for us to make a a meaningful contribution while strengthening our voulnteers' skills and experience. I'm excited about the prospect of creating new learning opportunities for the team (which will translate into expanding it) and continuing to sow seeds for the festival's growth.

Below is a bit of what we did ❤.

Sponsoring the Event to Support the Latin American Film Industry

🏆 Along the same vein, I was thrilled to be part of Semillas Lab, the first regional lab dedicated to promoting socially engaged film projects addressing environmental and human rights issues. Participant projects from Latin America had the chance to learn from industry leaders and work on their developing projects.

Argentina, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, and more Latin American countries are experiencing especially difficult times when it comes to their film industries. When governments see movies as nothing more than a commodity or a product, the whole structure that supports the industry becomes increasingly fragile

It is precisely in times like these that supporting culture means finding ways to strengthen the entire ecosystem. My work with FINCA has always been rooted in a festival with a clear social and environmental commitment. This year, through SubTexto, I wanted to take that commitment one step further: not only by contributing my work to the festival, but also by supporting projects that are still in the making. Through SubTexto, I offered two awards at Semillas Lab: one for the translation of a project proposal, and another, together with Paula Martel from Colectivo Rutemberg, to help strengthen proposals for international funding calls.

Supporting the film industry means helping film projects that make it up become possible in the first place.

Sowing the Seeds of Film

A huge thank you to the Semillas Lab team for the opportunity to be part of this initiative, and congratulations to everyone who participated with their projects! Sitting in on the pitching sessions is always inspiring: listening to creatives' ideas take shape, accompanying the process of materializing them and getting a glimpse of tomorrow's films is one of my favorite ways to peek into the future of our industry.

Already looking forward to our new and refreshed team next year!

Translating for the Film Industry

And this is what I hope SubTexto can continue to do: contribute not only to the projects that are already on screen, but also to the ideas, people and stories that will shape what comes next. If you are developing a film or audiovisual project and looking for support with translation, international applications or proposal development, get in touch. Let’s help good projects travel—and, hopefully, get made.
